Greetings doomers and gloomers,
Starting a new thing today. I will call it Release Of The Week. It’s quite simple, I’m going to choose a release (full length or EP) that I enjoy listening to and think deserves attention. It will be both old and new releases. The goal is obviously to present one release every week and you’re welcome to suggest releases that should be highlighted. Okay, let’s go.
DEATH SLUDGE. THE MEANEST SOUNDING BAND IN THE WORLD
PRIMITIVE MAN – Caustic
Caustic is the second full length album from the Denver trio and the 15th release with demos, singles and splits included. Quite an impressive number considering the band started 2012 and Caustic was released just 5 years later. I had heard a few of the band’s earlier releases before and liked them but Caustic was something else. It was the one that made me a big fan of the band.
They call their music death sludge. It’s a quite fitting description of the sludgy doom metal they annihilate eardrums and run over audiences with.
One of the things I like the most on this album and the band in general is the use of feedback and noise. It’s such a big part of the music and a key component to the suffocating atmosphere they create. I can’t think of many bands, if any, that do it like this.
Caustic is an excercise in crushing soul destroying monotonous riffs, vocals full of hatred, agony and despair and an endless apocalyptic pitch black darkness that gives you ominous creeping sensations through your body. The sudden tempo changes and the mentioned use of feedback and noise gives the already massive soundscape enormous depth.
I will never get tired of this insane album.

Caustic was released October 6th, 2017 by Relapse Recods digitally and on vinyl, cassette and CD. It was recorded and produced by Dave Otero at Flatline Audio in Denver, Colorado.
